Helmets Keep Us in the Saddle

Sometimes wearing a helmet seems like a bother. When it’s 90 degrees and humid, it seems
easier to saddle up without a helmet. After all, the wind will feel good blowing through your
hair, and you don’t plan on doing anything crazy today. But before you put that foot in your
stirrup, remember that accidents often happen when you are doing the simple things, like
walking past a building you pass every day or just trotting around your arena. It only takes one
accident to change your life forever. Your head is fragile, and your helmet is the only thing
standing between your head and the ground.
And it’s not enough just to throw on any old helmet. Make sure your helmet is properly fitted
with the chin strap snugly fastened. Also, don’t wear helmets that have already had a significant
impact from a previous fall. A few safety measures can go a long way to keeping you in the
saddle.
